Should children be required to be vaccinated in order to attend a public school?

In the past several years there have been many affluent parents in the US that have decided not to vaccinate their children (or to administer less vaccines than is recommended by reputable medical organizations) due to fear of unintended consequences from vaccines and the belief that vaccines aren't as needed as they used to be (or that they don't need to vaccinate their child because everyone else is, so the "herd" is vaccinated). Some feel this is irresponsible and could lead to increased outbreaks of illnesses that used to be fatal in children (whopping cough, etc.) and that parents who refuse vaccinations are putting themselves at great risk and potentially others (infants and toddlers who haven't been vaccinated yet for example).
