We constantly push for differentiated instruction, yet we give a standardized one size fits all test. There are multiple ways to demonstrate if a skill has been learned or not. In my view, the standardized test is not the only way to determine if someone has learned something or not. Some are better expressing verbally while others demonstrate better in hands-on exercises. It's sad that we've come to use the standardized test as a measure of accountability. Also, there are so many other variables that are a part of a student's ability to academically achieve.
Seems the kids and teachers spend too much time preparing for these tests and not enough time learning.
Testing should be only a small part of education
Standardized test lead to rote teaching & rote learning. In my experience they discourage creative thinking on both sides of the classroom (40+ years in the college classroom)
Standardized tests are contributing to the "dumbing down" of American education standards. Because of high stakes testing, most states "teach to the test" and write their standards to the test whether or not they admit it. All of the standards are designed for students to do well on the tests. The learning goals are designed for the standards. As more students struggle to meet those standards, we lower them. It doesn't allow time for students to learn in the way best suited for them and it does not account for other factors which may affect a child's growth. Also, each school is different. Schools in large cities have more access to resource than a school in a very rural area.
